Performing “My Girl”, these Tiny Temptations from Baldwin Hills Elementary stunned audiences with their costumes and choreography in a Classic Motown Revue.
Schools across the country are seeing budget restraints and are cutting their music and arts programs first. But teachers know the importance of the arts as an outlet for children to connect with their peers and to learn in a different way.
Malinda Williams teaches 3rd-5th grades at Baldwin Hills Elementary in Los Angeles. Williams noticed that her students’ perspective of music was only modern digitized choruses that offered no sense of story-telling or musicality. That’s when she decided to host “The Sounds of Motown” and pair up groups of children to learn choreography to songs by Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, and The Supremes to name just a few.
Williams posted on Facebook: “After seeing the response I’ve gotten over these past few days, I realize that God has given me something special. “Thank you, Lord.”….This is a labor of love. Emphasis on the word labor, but a heavier emphasis on the word LOVE! I LOVE CHILDREN, I LOVE TO TEACH, I LOVE TO DANCE, I LOVE OLD SCHOOL MUSIC!”
