Meet Dudley, the polite doggie with an amazing talent. Any neighbor would want to have this little buddy for their housemate. Not wanting to disturb others, this dog whispers instead of barks when he is excited!
Dudley’s owner, Brian Gertler, is a residence director at university and lives on campus with his wife and 2 dogs inside a freshman dorm. The students are unable to have pets while on campus, however Brian is allowed. He finds that the dogs are great help to those kids who are apprehensive about being away from home and their family (and pets!) for the first time.
“It’s a good icebreaker for a lot of these students,” Gertler said. “Sometimes they feel more comfortable talking to the dogs than talking to me.”
While Dudley and his doggie pal were a huge success during the day, their playtime antics at night were not so popular. The students trying to sleep and prepare for the next day were being woken up by the doggies. After seeing how out of breath Dudley would get during a game of fetch, Brian fell into a brilliant idea. He decided to try teaching Dudley to “whisper” instead of bark. And it worked!
“I started teaching him how to speak then I realized when he gets out of breath he would just mouth it,” Gertler told BND News. “When he starts barking, I tell him to speak and he doesn’t bark anymore.”
Now instead of Dudley getting excited during playtime and barking loudly for all to hear, he instead gives the politest of whispers on the “speak” command. What a smart doggy!
