Boy Asks For 2nd Lunch
Josette Duran was packing a school lunch for her son Dylan when he said something that surprised her. He asked if she could pack him a 2nd lunch each day. She says the conversation went a little like this:
Dylan: Mama can you make me TWO lunches today?
Me: Are you not getting full boo?
Dylan: Yes Mom, it’s for this boy. He only eats a fruit cup for lunch. Can you make him lunch too? I don’t think he has lunch money.
She learned that Dylan’s friend’s mom is a single mother who had lost her job. That hit Josette like a ton of bricks. You see, Josette herself was once homeless.
She and Dylan were once so broke, they lived out of her car. She knew she had to help Dylan’s friend!
“This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless. I was living in my car, and I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn’t have food.” Josette said.
Josette Gets A Phone Call
So Josette packed Dylan two lunches each day. And after some time passed, she received a phone call from Dylan’s school principal asking for a meeting.
Dylan’s friend’s mom had learned what Josette was doing, and she wanted to talk to her.
The two met at the school. “I know this isn’t much, but I just got a job, and I know you’ve been feeding my son,” she confessed to Josette.
Of course, Josette refused the money. But that’s not all Josette did.
No Hungry Students At Dylan’s School
Not only did Josette not take the struggling mom’s money. But she also raised an additional $400 and paid off all past due lunch accounts for the students at Dylan’s school.
“So now, nobody in that school owes any money, and now everyone can eat,” Josette said.
